- A resident individual below 60 with salary income. Senior citizens have a higher basic exemption in the old regime, which is not modelled here.
- Only the deductions you enter are applied, and only in the old regime — the new regime allows neither 80C nor HRA exemption.
- Surcharge is applied at the standard rates, but surcharge marginal relief is not modelled, so very high incomes (above ₹50 lakh) may be slightly overstated.
- No capital gains, business income, house-property loss or set-off of losses is included. Those are taxed under separate heads with their own rates.

About the income tax calculator
Since the new regime became the default, the old-versus-new question has a different answer for almost every income level. The new regime has wider slabs and a much larger rebate, but it gives up the deductions — 80C, 80D, home-loan interest, HRA — that the old regime still allows.
Enter your gross salary income and, if you are comparing the old regime, your eligible deductions. The calculator runs both regimes at once and shows the taxable income, the slab tax, the rebate under Section 87A, any surcharge and the 4% health and education cess, plus the difference between the two.
This is an estimate for a resident individual below 60 with salary income. Capital gains, business income, house-property loss and the surcharge marginal relief are not modelled, so treat the result as a planning figure rather than a filing figure.
Frequently asked questions
Which regime is better for me?
It depends almost entirely on how many deductions you can actually claim. Above roughly ₹4–5 lakh of deductions the old regime often wins; below that the new regime's wider slabs and bigger rebate usually come out ahead. Run both numbers here rather than guessing.
What are the new regime slabs for FY 2025-26?
Nil up to ₹4 lakh, 5% from ₹4–8 lakh, 10% from ₹8–12 lakh, 15% from ₹12–16 lakh, 20% from ₹16–20 lakh, 25% from ₹20–24 lakh and 30% above ₹24 lakh, plus 4% cess.
Do I get the standard deduction in the new regime?
Yes. A salaried taxpayer gets a flat ₹75,000 standard deduction in the new regime, reduced from gross salary before the slabs are applied. The old regime keeps the same ₹75,000 deduction but also allows professional tax and the other Chapter VI-A deductions.
How much income is tax-free in the new regime?
Because of the Section 87A rebate, a resident individual with taxable income up to ₹12 lakh pays no tax in the new regime for FY 2025-26. For a salaried person the ₹75,000 standard deduction means a gross salary of about ₹12.75 lakh can still land at zero tax.
Is surcharge included?
Yes, at the standard rates — 10% above ₹50 lakh, 15% above ₹1 crore, and 25% above ₹2 crore in both regimes, with 37% additionally above ₹5 crore in the old regime only. Marginal relief on the surcharge is not applied, so very high incomes may be slightly overstated.
