TDS is not an extra tax
The 1% TDS was withheld at the moment of sale, so it has already left your account. It is a credit against the 30% liability, not a charge on top of it — if your TDS for the year exceeds your tax, you claim the difference back as a refund when you file.
What this assumes
  • Fees and GST on fees are not deductible against tax. The 30% is charged on the raw price gain even when fees turn the trade into a net loss.
  • Losses from other trades cannot be set off here. Set each profitable sale's gain, or use the crypto tax calculator for the full year.
  • A swap between two coins is treated as a sale of the coin you gave up, at its rupee value on that date, so it belongs in the same calculation.
  • Surcharge does not apply to virtual digital assets, and this models a single realised trade — not unrealised gains or holdings.

About the crypto profit calculator

A trade that looks profitable on the exchange screen rarely is once the Indian tax rules are applied. Between the exchange fee on each side, the 18% GST you pay on those fees, the 1% TDS withheld when you sell, and the 30% tax on the gain, a large slice of your profit never reaches you.

This calculator shows every one of those cuts as a separate line, so you can see which cost actually matters for your trade size. It also distinguishes cash in hand from final tax: the 1% TDS is withheld at sale, but it is not an extra tax — it is credited against your total liability when you file.

Change the fee percentage to match your exchange (most Indian exchanges charge between 0.1% and 0.2% per side) and the calculator updates instantly.

Frequently asked questions

How is crypto taxed in India?

Gains from virtual digital assets are taxed at a flat 30% under Section 115BBH, plus 4% cess — an effective 31.2%. You cannot deduct trading fees, internet costs or any other expense, and you cannot set one coin's loss against another coin's profit.

What is the 1% TDS on crypto?

Section 194S requires the buyer or exchange to withhold 1% of the sale consideration when you sell. It is withheld from the gross sale value, not the profit, and it applies even when you sell at a loss. The amount withheld shows up as a credit against your tax liability in your Form 26AS.

Is GST charged on crypto trading fees?

Yes. The exchange's fee is a service, and 18% GST applies to it. On a 0.2% trading fee the GST adds roughly 0.036% per side, which is small per trade but adds up quickly for frequent traders.

Can I offset a loss on one coin against profit on another?

No. Losses from virtual digital assets cannot be set off against gains from other VDAs, other capital gains, or business income, and they cannot be carried forward. Each profitable sale is taxed on its own.

Do I still have to pay tax if I never converted to rupees?

Yes. For Indian tax purposes every swap between two crypto assets is treated as a transfer of the asset you gave away, so a direct BTC-to-ETH trade is still a taxable disposal of the BTC at its rupee value on that date.
